Branched Amino Acids (BCAA)
(25 of 43)BCAA: what branched-chain amino acids are
BCAA (branched-chain amino acids) are a group of three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. They are called "essential" because the body cannot produce them on its own and they must be obtained through diet or supplementation. They are among the most popular supplements among people who train.
BCAA ratios: 2:1:1, 4:1:1 and 8:1:1
BCAA are available in different ratios of leucine, isoleucine and valine:
- BCAA 2:1:1: the most classic and balanced ratio, with double the amount of leucine.
- BCAA 4:1:1 and 8:1:1: formulations with a higher percentage of leucine.
They are also available in different forms, such as powder and tablets, to suit everyone's preferences.
When to take BCAA
Branched-chain amino acids are commonly taken before, during or after training, depending on your goals and the type of activity. The way they are taken may vary and depends on individual needs.
