Liv.52 and Liv.52 DS: what it is, how to take it and the difference

What Himalaya Liv.52 is, how Liv.52, Liv.52 DS and Liv.52 DS PRO differ, how to take them according to the manufacturer's European pages, which warnings to read on the label and why no claim on the extracts of these plants is authorised.

Liv.52 and Liv.52 DS: what it is, how to take it and the difference

Liv.52 is one of Himalaya's best known products, and people looking it up usually have three questions: what it is, how to take it and how Liv.52, Liv.52 DS and Liv.52 DS PRO differ. This guide answers with what the manufacturer states on its European pages and with what the law says, without promises about effects.

What is Liv.52?

Liv.52 is a herbal formula from the Indian company Himalaya, which states on its Indian website that it was launched in 1955. It comes in tablets, and there are several versions with the same name: Liv.52, Liv.52 DS and the more recent Liv.52 DS PRO.

In Europe these products are sold as food supplements. Himalaya's Indian website, intended for residents of India only, presents Liv.52 as a medicinal product instead, with indications and doses that do not apply to a food supplement sold in Europe: when you read about Liv.52 online, always check which country the information refers to.

What is the difference between Liv.52, Liv.52 DS and Liv.52 DS PRO?

On Himalaya's European pages, read in October 2026, the three versions are described as follows:

In practice: on the European page Liv.52 and Liv.52 DS have the same list of plants and the same directions, and the pack size changes. The page does not explain the letters «DS» and does not give the milligrams per tablet: to compare them you need the table on the pack label. Liv.52 DS PRO is a different formula: of the Liv.52 plants it keeps only yarrow, and it adds Phyllanthus amarus, green tea, dandelion and artichoke with declared amounts.

The European DS PRO page does not say whether the milligrams refer to one tablet or to the daily dose of two tablets: here too the label is what counts.

What is Liv.52 DS used for?

It is the most common question, and the answer goes through the law. In Europe a food supplement can claim a health effect only if the claim has been authorised by the Commission after an EFSA opinion. For plants the process has been stalled for years: EFSA has put on hold 1,548 claims on botanical extracts, pending a decision by the Commission and the Member States.

That list includes every plant in Liv.52 and Liv.52 DS PRO: caper bush, chicory, arjuna, French tamarisk, Cassia occidentalis, black nightshade, yarrow, Phyllanthus amarus, dandelion, artichoke and green tea. No claim on the extracts of these plants is authorised, and in the EU register some of those already assessed are listed as not authorised.

That is why this guide does not describe the effects of Liv.52, and why we suggest you are wary of promises about the liver, digestion or «detox», whoever makes them. What can be assessed with certainty is the composition, the directions and the warnings.

How do you take Liv.52?

  • Liv.52 and Liv.52 DS: according to Himalaya's European pages, 1-2 tablets twice a day, with water.
  • Liv.52 DS PRO: for adults 1 tablet twice a day, with water, preferably after meals.

In every case the recommended daily intake should not be exceeded. The doses on the Indian website refer to a product classed as a medicine in another country: do not use them for a food supplement bought in Europe. If the pack you have gives different directions from these, follow the pack.

Liv.52: contraindications and warnings

The warnings Himalaya states on its European pages are these:

  • Liv.52 and Liv.52 DS: not recommended for children under 14; keep out of the reach of children; do not exceed the recommended daily intake.
  • Liv.52 DS PRO: not recommended for people under 18, breastfeeding women and elderly people; do not use during pregnancy; keep out of the reach of young children.

DS PRO contains green tea extract, and for green tea extracts European law (Regulation (EU) 2022/2340) sets precise rules: a daily portion must contain less than 800 mg of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the label must state the EGCG content per portion and must carry three warnings: do not consume the product if you consume other products containing green tea on the same day, it should not be consumed by pregnant or breastfeeding women or by children under 18, do not consume it on an empty stomach. If you already take another supplement with green tea, read the two labels together.

Before taking any herbal supplement, ask your doctor first if you have a liver disease or another condition, if you take medication, during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

How do you read the label of a herbal supplement?

  • Latin name of the plant and part used: root, leaf or whole plant are not the same thing. In DS PRO, for example, dandelion is root and artichoke is leaf.
  • Extract or powder: an extract concentrates some substances of the plant, a powder is the dried and ground plant. The same number of milligrams does not mean the same thing.
  • Milligrams per tablet or per dose: check which of the two the table refers to, and multiply by the number of tablets in the daily dose.
  • Warnings: they are the part to read first, especially if the formula contains green tea or if you take other supplements.

In short

  • Liv.52 is a Himalaya herbal formula, launched in 1955; in Europe it is sold as a food supplement.
  • On the European page Liv.52 and Liv.52 DS have the same list of plants and the same directions; Liv.52 DS PRO is a different formula, with 5 extracts and declared amounts.
  • Claims on the effects of these plants are on hold in the EFSA list: none is authorised.
  • Directions: 1-2 tablets twice a day for Liv.52 and Liv.52 DS, 1 tablet twice a day after meals for DS PRO.
  • DS PRO contains green tea: check the EGCG content and the warnings on the label.

You will find Liv.52 DS PRO 60 tablets, the other products of the brand on the Himalaya page and herbal supplements in the Purifying and draining category.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake stated on the label.
