Joar Opheim grew up in Arctic Norway, where cod liver oil is a family habit. When he came to California for an MBA he could not find it in the shops, and in 1995 he founded Nordic Naturals. The brand describes itself as a family-owned company with no outside shareholders.

The omega-3 products are all in the Omega 3 and Fish Oil category: Arctic Cod Liver Oil, a 237 ml liquid, lemon-flavoured Ultimate Omega-D3 softgels, which combine fish oil and vitamin D3, Algae DHA, with DHA from algae instead of fish, and Prenatal DHA with vitamin D3.

How to choose a Nordic Naturals product

Check the label for the milligrams of EPA and DHA per serving, not the weight of the oil or the capsule: two fish oil products can contain very different amounts. If you do not eat fish, algae DHA is the alternative; during pregnancy, ask your doctor before taking a supplement. Compare products on the grams of each ingredient per serving, not on the weight of the pack, and always follow the daily dose stated on the label: a supplement is no substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
