Omega 3 & Fish Oil
What are Omega 3 and fish oil?
Omega 3 are polyunsaturated fatty acids that the body produces only in limited amounts, so they need to come from diet or supplementation. The most studied are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), found mainly in oily fish such as salmon, anchovies and sardines. Fish oil is the most common source of EPA and DHA in supplements; DHA can also be obtained from microalgae, a source suitable for people who do not eat fish.
Which sources of Omega 3 are in this category?
- Fish oil softgels, including concentrated and molecularly distilled oils, with the EPA and DHA content stated per serving.
- Krill oil, extracted from small crustaceans of cold seas.
- Cod liver oil, in softgels and in liquid form.
- Algae DHA, a plant-based source.
- Combined formulas with other oils, such as Omega 3-6-9, evening primrose oil and sea buckthorn oil, or with vitamins such as D3.
CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is not an Omega 3: you will find it in the CLA category, while other fatty acids are in Other Fatty Acids.
What do EPA and DHA do?
EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart; the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and to the maintenance of normal vision; the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA. When comparing products, the amount of EPA and DHA per serving shown on the label matters more than the total milligrams of oil.
How should you take Omega 3?
Omega 3 fatty acids are fat-soluble, so they are usually taken with a main meal. Softgels are the most practical format; liquid oil allows higher doses with fewer capsules. Always follow the daily dose stated on the pack of each product. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
