What are multivitamins and multiminerals?

Multivitamins and multiminerals are food supplements that provide a wide spectrum of essential vitamins and minerals in a single formula. They are designed to cover potential micronutrient gaps that can arise during periods of intense training, restrictive dieting, or simply in everyday life when the diet is not always perfectly balanced. They are among the most widely used food supplements in the world, by both athletes and active people of all ages.

Which vitamins and minerals do they contain?

A good sports multivitamin combines micronutrients with complementary, science-backed functions:

  • Vitamin C: contributes to the normal function of the immune system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Vitamin D: contributes to the normal function of the immune system and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
  • Magnesium: contributes to normal energy metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue; also supports normal muscle function.
  • Zinc: contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and the normal function of the immune system.
  • B vitamins (B6, B12, folic acid): contribute to normal energy metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Iron: contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and normal oxygen transport in the body.

When and how should you take them?

Multivitamins are generally taken once a day, preferably during or immediately after a meal to aid absorption. Some sports-specific products are formulated in AM/PM split doses to optimise the bioavailability of individual nutrients. Specific versions are available for men, women, over-50s and vegans. Do not exceed the doses indicated on the label. Remember: food supplements are not intended as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
